Stunning Millbrook Manor

Diving into the artful design of Millbrook Manor’s grounds. This estate didn’t only echo its stunning surroundings, it elevated them. Every tree, hedge, and pathway has been selected and placed to amplify the landscape’s natural grandeur while showcasing a singular character all its own.

A Pathway Lined with Lime

Tilia platyphyllos – Green Pavilion

Bordering the gravel entrance, Tilia platyphyllos (Large-Leaved Lime) greets you with heart-shaped, fresh-green leaves that radiate vitality. In Summer, delicate white-cream blooms appear – not bold, but delightfully fragrant, drawing honeybees into a sweet-scented procession. Come late Autumn, the foliage transforms into vibrant yellow, celebrating the season in style.

Architectural Illusions with Hedging & Hornbeam

Buxus sempervirens

Along the residence walls, low Buxus sempervirens (English Box) hedging intertwines with the slim, upright trunks of Carpinus betulus ‘Fastigiata’ (Upright Hornbeam). The deep-green box foliage contrasts with the Hornbeam’s columnar habit, creating a visual trick that makes the building seem taller and more statuesque.

Pleached London Planes: Shade & Serenity

Platanus acerifolia

Flanking the elevated seating terrace is Platanus acerifolia (London Plane). Its clean, mottled trunk supports a pleached canopy of large, maple-like leaves, a perfect spot to soak in the sun or drift into a Summer nap beneath leafy shade.

Fragrant Borders & Lush Lawns

Prunus - Millbrook Manor - May 2023
Prunus lusitanica

Encircling the oval lawn, you’ll find more Upright Hornbeams, a double row of Lonicera nitida (Box Honeysuckle), and Prunus lusitanica (Portuguese Laurel). The Honeysuckle’s deep Winter tones and the Laurel’s glossy foliage add texture and depth next to the meticulously manicured grass, creating a layered tapestry of green.

Centre Court Applause

Zelkova - Millbrook Manor - Autumn 2025
Zelkova serrata

The tennis court enjoys a permanent audience of Portuguese laurels, bursting into fragrant white racemes in late Spring and Summer. Interplanted Zelkova serrata (Japanese Elm) will eventually offer generous shade as their trunks peel back to reveal an orange-brown inner bark.

Harry Winter planting tips: One way to keep your hands warm in Winter is to keep them busy with some planting! It might sound like a strange time to do this but we’re operating on nature’s timeline here, and nature is making sure the soil is moist, while keeping bugs and plant diseases at bay. Your new plants will appreciate the time getting used to their new home before Spring kicks in.
Harry Winter Fruit Tree Pruning Tips: It's true alright. Some work now will reap a bountiful harvest next Summer, when you really do get to enjoy the fruits of your labour. The key is to stick to the 3 D's of pruning, getting rid of anything that's dead, diseased or damaged. Go about your work on a dry day and wear a few layers, so you can take them off as needed. Different fruit trees need to be pruned slightly differently but in general, just remember to not get too carried away. Trimming back by about 20% is a good rule of thumb.
