In the heart of Glenorchy, The Headwaters Eco Lodge stands as one of the world’s leading regenerative destinations. Known for its handcrafted alpine character and deep commitment to sustainability, the lodge offers an experience shaped by the tranquillity of the upper Lake Whakatipū basin.
The site began as the much‑loved Glenorchy campground. In 2014, Debbi and Paul Brainerd set out to transform the ageing grounds into a place that would give back more than it takes. Their vision has resulted in a globally recognised eco lodge built with natural materials, artisan craftsmanship and discreet high performance systems. Today, it is the first accommodation in the world to achieve full Living Building certification.
The surrounding grounds reflect the same regenerative intent. Planting palettes draw from the native ecology of the Glenorchy basin, with landscapes designed to thrive in alpine conditions with minimal irrigation. Rain gardens, permeable surfaces and productive food gardens support water stewardship and closed loop systems. Quiet outdoor spaces framed by native shelter plantings offer guests a sense of calm and connection.
Feature Species: Nothofagus solandri var. cliffortioides
In stunning Spring flower this past season
Mountain Beech is one of the defining species of the upper Whakatipū region and a natural fit for the lodge’s alpine setting. Its upright form, fine foliage and dark canopy give it a distinctive silhouette that anchors the wider landscape.

As a true alpine specialist, Mountain Beech thrives in cold, exposed conditions, handles snow load and wind, and performs well in thin, stony soils. It is also a keystone species, supporting native insects, birds and fungi. Once established, it requires minimal irrigation or maintenance, making it ideal for regenerative landscapes.
