The Headwaters Eco Lodge
The Headwaters Eco Lodge is a world‑leading regenerative destination located in the heart of Glenorchy. Celebrated for its pioneering sustainability and handcrafted alpine character, the lodge offers an experience that blends warm hospitality with the tranquillity of its natural landscape. Every element of the site has been designed to restore, inspire and reflect the beauty of the upper Lake Whakatipū basin.
Heritage and Transformation
The lodge stands on the historic Glenorchy campground, a cherished lakeside retreat for generations of travellers. In 2014, the site began an ambitious transformation led by Debbi and Paul Brainerd, who envisioned a regenerative, community‑minded destination that would give back more than it takes. Their investment revitalised the ageing campground into a globally recognised eco lodge, integrating natural materials, artisan craftsmanship and discreet high‑performance infrastructure. Today, The Headwaters Eco Lodge is the first accommodation in the world to achieve full Living Building certification, ensuring its legacy endures for generations.
The Regenerative Grounds
Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Humboldt and Richardson Ranges, the lodge’s grounds embody resilience, ecological care and alpine character:
- Planting palettes inspired by the native ecology of the Glenorchy basin
- Landscapes designed to thrive in alpine conditions with minimal irrigation
- Rain‑garden systems and permeable surfaces that support water stewardship
- Quiet outdoor spaces framed by native shelter plantings, offering moments of reflection
- Productive gardens and composting systems that support on‑site food and waste cycles
The Headwaters & Easy Big Trees: A Partnership Rooted in Regeneration
The Headwaters Eco Lodge is defined by its commitment to environmental excellence. Every planting choice is intentional, supporting soil health, biodiversity and long‑term flexibility. At Easy Big Trees, we share this dedication to thoughtful, climate‑appropriate design. From the sculptural forms of native evergreens to the seasonal interest of hardy deciduous species, each tree contributes to a landscape that is both beautiful and regenerative. The result is a living environment that enriches the guest experience while honouring the natural rhythms of the Glenorchy region.
