Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles - Tree Planting

In honour of our Queen, this week we’re taking the opportunity to highlight some of the trees we know to be amongst her Majesty’s favourites. Queen Elizabeth 2nd was a great avocate for trees and planted many throughout her service.

LIRIODENDRON tulipifera - Tulip Tree

The Liriodendron tulipifera – Tulip Tree is a known favourite and was planted in a number of parks across Great Britain for the Queen’s platinum jubilee, earlier in the year.  It also happens to be the tree the Queen herself planted, on a visit to New Zealand, back in 1986.

LIRIODENDRON tulipifera - Otago University, Dunedin, October

A vigorous tree with a pyramidal form, the distinctive shaped leaves turn a buttery-gold in Autumn, not long after the distinctive tulip shaped flowers have finished their summer show. Those flowers are yellow-green, with orange insides and a scent reminiscent of magnolia. Ideal for street or avenue planting, this deciduous tree will grow to 8m+.

LUMA apiculata - Flower and Trunk, September

Used multiple times by the royal family, Myrtle – Luma apiculata is another known favourite.  Flowers from this tree were used in her bridal bouquet, a decision replicated both by Kate, the Princess of Wales, and Meghan Markle, The Duchess of Sussex, at their weddings.

The delicate, four petaled white flowers appear both happy and hopeful.  A near perfect symbol for young love.  They are especially noticeable against the dark, green foliage and contrasting orange trunk.
