Reflecting on ANZAC Day: a legacy of resilience

As April unfolds, we find ourselves standing at the crossroads of an important commemoration: ANZAC Day on 25 April.

ANZAC Day is a solemn occasion marked by reflection and respect in Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia, and beyond. It honours the courage and sacrifice of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) soldiers who served during World War I, particularly in the Gallipoli campaign of 1915. The day has since grown to encompass all servicemen and servicewomen who have fought for their countries, representing a poignant reminder of the fragility of peace and the strength of human resolve.

Lest We Forget

Connecting this observance to nature is the symbolism found in the Quercus ilex – Evergreen Holm Oak, also known as the Holm Oak. Native to the Mediterranean region, this evergreen species embodies resilience, surviving harsh climates and poor soils while providing shelter and sustenance to wildlife. The Holm Oak thrives in coastal conditions and nutrient-poor soils, reaching heights of up to 10 metres with a crown spreading 5 metres wide. Its leathery, deep green leaves provide year-round shade, and its versatile nature makes it suitable for uses such as hedging, screening, and avenue planting.

Much like the ANZAC soldiers who faced adversity with grit and determination, the Holm Oak stands as a steadfast reminder of the endurance of life, even in the face of hardship. On ANZAC Day, as we lay wreaths and reflect on history, we might also take a moment to consider the land that bore witness to the soldiers’ sacrifices. The Mediterranean, where Gallipoli is located, is home to the Holm Oak and many other resilient species – living tributes to the strength that humans and nature share.

Let this week be a time for reflection on the interconnectedness of humanity and nature. In honouring history, we contribute to a legacy of resilience that is both timeless and universal.
