This month’s staff selection is by Marcia, our Marketing expert from the music filled streets of Rio De Janeiro, who has happily sambad her way over to Southland, where she keeps our promotional drum beating a merry tune.
Marcia’s has opted for a flowering cherry that can continues to bloom into late Spring, willfully defying expectations and putting on a show featuring a seemingly endless parade of blooming encores.
This is not a tree afraid of the spotlight. Indeed, it grabs and holds your attention long after many others have succumbed to the (hopefully) wilting heat of Summer.
Famed for being one of the most showy cherry trees (who are a pretty showy bunch), the Kanzan features frilly double flowers held in pendant-like clusters.
PRUNUS serrulata ‘Kanzan’ – Pink Flowering Cherry
This tree creates an effervescent aesthetic which resembles the bubbles of pink champagne enjoyed at the first hint of sunshine on a lazy Sunday afternoon with visiting friends. Reddish-copper leaves show as Summer arrives, turning to a dark green to form a dense canopy. The Autumn show is all oranges and bronzes, drawing an end to the season as this graceful ornamental tree finally withdraws from the stage (if only for a brief period).
- Deciduous, with vased form and rich double pink blossom
- Suitable for street and avenue planting, group or specimen
- Can grow up to 8×8 meters
