RATA’s trees of the week – Blossoming Cherries 🌸💕 – 27th September 2021


There’s nothing that says ‘Spring is Here’ more than the Cherry Blossoms showing all their glory.

Here we have a selection of our favourite varieties, featuring some project images from the Central Otago reigon – taken just this week.

PRUNUS ‘Falling Snow’ – Weeping White Blossom

PRUNUS subhirtella ‘Falling Snow’ – Weeping White Blossom

A very aptly named tree! Graceful weeping branches which are covered in blush pink-white blossom early spring. A tidy tree. Deciduous, grows to 2-3m

PRUNUS serrulata ‘Kanzan’ – Double Pink Blossom

Hardy and popular upright vase-shaped cherry. Has attractive new coppery foliage and deep double pink blossom in October which lasts for several weeks. Good autumn colour. Hardy, deciduous, grows to 6 x 4m.

PRUNUS subhirtella ‘Pendula Rosea’ – Pink Weeping Blossom

A small weeping dome-shaped tree. Is covered with deep pink buds which open to clear pink dainty flowers early spring. A very pretty tree, great for the smaller garden or in a confined space. Deciduous, grows to 2-3m high.

PRUNUS serrulata ‘Shimidsu Sakura’ – Moonlight Cherry

 

A beautiful smaller tree with a graceful spreading form. Double flowers opening pink and fading to blush white from October through to November. An ideal smaller avenue or garden ornamental tree. Hardy, deciduous, grows to 4 x 5m.

PRUNUS yedoensis – Yoshino Cherry

The PRUNUS yedoensis is one of our most hardy and favourite blossoming cherry, used extensively in street and garden plantings from Southland to Canterbury. It is one of the first cherries in flower, covered in a mass of almond-scented single blush white flowers early spring followed by brilliant orange to red autumn colour. It has a compact vase to spreading form. Excellent street or avenue tree. Hardy, deciduous, grows to 5 x 4m.

These impressive specimens have been upsized into 1000lt bags just this week! For scale the Giant Loader is approx 2m high.
