AMELANCHIER canadensis (Whitebait Tree) – Cheerful Star Shaped Blossom

Whitebait Tree - AMELANCHIER canadensis - Oct, Queens Park - Invercargill

AMELANCHIER canadensis (whitebait tree) group planting – Queens Park, Invercargill

Amelanchier is a hardy medium sized tree with pretty white star shaped flowers covering the tree early-mid spring (attractive to birds) Tolerates a wide range of conditions including windy, damp and dry sites and very frost hardy. A great versatile tree for any garden.

Point of interest: The Amelanchier common name ‘Shad Tree’ came from its native America. Shad is a small fish very like our Native Whitebait. When the Amelanchier flowers early spring, the  ‘Shad’ would also be coming up the rivers! This is also the exact timing our Native Whitebait also arrive in sequence with the Amelanchier flowering – hence the name ‘Whitebait Tree’ 🙂
